1/28/11 Tip – Remixing

Kendi Everyday shares her thoughts on remixing (as well as her technical definitition if you have no clue what I’m talking about).

Here’s a repost of a remixing article that I posted on Froogaloo last year:

I don’t consider myself a fashionista, but I do love to shop. I have a tendency to get bored with my closet every now and then, but thanks to the art of “remixing” I can shop my own closet for free. I like free.

So, what is remixing? I define it as using items you already own to create new outfits. We all get stuck in a rut sometimes and wear the same pieces of clothing together over and over again because it’s easy. It also gets boring. One great way to experiment with remixing is to grab your favorite item of clothing and try it on with something you wouldn’t normally pair it with. Or have a stylish friend put together some outfits for you. Just start trying things on and spend an afternoon playing dress-up. You might be surprised at what works and what doesn’t. You can also look to magazines (such as Lucky, my favorite!) or fashion blogs for inspiration. I try to follow this rule when I shop – If I can’t remix it 3 different ways, I don’t buy it.

Another easy and cheap way to freshen up an outfit is to wear a necklace, add a scarf, or wear a belt. Accessories are a cheap, easy way to liven up your wardrobe. You can usually find great accessories at your local thrift shop, Goodwill, or garage sale for a few dollars. I also love to hit clearance racks at Kohl’s, JCPenney, or Macy’s for accessories. They usually have some awesome clearance prices – which are even better if you shop with a coupon, like I ALWAYS do!

I also try to plan my outfits in advance so I’m not scrambling around in the mornings. I value my sleep too much. Planning ahead insures that I won’t grab the same old boring outfit just because it’s easy. And I utilize more of my closet. Win-Win.

Remixing is a great way to feel like you have a new wardrobe and keep that cash in your bank account. If you must shop, try checking out some cute new accessories to get your shopping fix. And don’t forget those coupons!
