Tip of the Day 3/31/10

Ask about price matching.

Many stores will match other retailers’ discounts, but most don’t advertise this. Ask a manager if your store has this policy.

Wal-Mart & Target will price match if you bring in the competitor’s advertisement.

Any other stores that will price match?

*Sorry – I don’t think this is a coupon. It appears that select styles are an additional 25% off.

Tip of the Day 3/27/10

If a coupon doesn’t specify a size requirement, always buy the smallest size to get the best deal.

For example, you might be able to use 12 rolls of toilet paper, but you will pay less per roll if you use that coupon on a 4 roll package. You should always calculate the price per roll (or ounce, pound, box, etc.) to determine if you really are getting a good deal.

Stack coupons with rebates for even more savings!

Remember the Olay rebate I mentioned here? This is a great example of stacking coupons with rebates. By combining a coupon with an item that is free after rebate, it is possible to make money! And since Walgreens is also giving a free product with purchase, you are getting an even better deal! I love getting paid to shop. Here are the details:

Rebate Tips

Lots of manufacturers offer rebates, but less than 40% of consumers actually redeem them. What a waste of money! The manufacturer lures you in with promise of money back, but you forget about it or don’t want to waste your time. Not anymore! Here are some tips to help you get back the money you deserve.

1. Ask the cashier for a second copy of your receipt. Rebate forms almost always ask for an original receipt. This way you have an original also.

2. Keep the receipts in your wallet so they won’t get lost.

3. Complete the rebate form that same day so you don’t get distracted and forget about it.

4. Read the instructions carefully and do exactly what is asked. This is important. Manufacturers will reject a rebate request if you are missing information. Generally, you are asked to submit a rebate form, an original receipt, and UPC code, but there may be other requirements.

5. Copy the form for your files. Then you will have the information you need to contact the manufacturer if you don’t receive your rebate.

6. Keep a record of the date you mailed the rebate, rebate amount, and when you expect to receive a check. Then you know when to contact the manufacturer if you haven’t receive your rebate. I like to use a simple excel spreadsheet for this. There are also online rebate trackers available like this.

7. Make sure the rebate form has not expired and that you made the purchase within the correct time frame.

Do you have any other rebate tips to share?
Thanks, Froogaloo!

Tip of the Day 3/24/10

Freeze leftovers!

I know my family gets bored with leftovers, so many times I will put the leftovers in the freezer for later. It keeps meal time interesting and saves me time in the future.

What’s for Dinner? 3/23/10

Barbecued Chicken Pizza!

I found this pizza dough recipe in Everyday Food magazine, and it is wonderful! It takes a bit of time, but I think it tastes even better than pizzeria crust.

Top with barbecue sauce, barbecued chicken, red onions, and cheese for a delicious meal. I used the leftover chicken from here.

Basic Pizza Dough
Makes 2 pounds (approximately 2 pizza crusts)

Ingredients:

2 packets active dry yeast
2 tbsp sugar
1/4 cup olive oil, plus more for bowl and brushing
2 tsp salt
4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface

Directions:

1. Pour 1 1/2 cups warm water into a large bowl. Sprinkle with yeast and let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.
2. Whisk sugar, oil, and salt into yeast mixture. Add flour and stir until a sticky dough forms. Transfer dough to an oiled bowl and brush top with oil. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm, draft-free place until dough has doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. Turn out onto a lightly floured work surface and gently knead 1 or 2 times before using.

*To freeze, wrap the dough in plastic and freeze it in a resealable freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Couponing for Baby

As a new mom, I expected our monthly grocery bill to increase. Thanks to couponing & stockpiling, however, it did the exact opposite. Even with the extra milk, diapers, wipes, and all of the other new necessities we added to the list, I have managed to cut our grocery bill by more than 50%! How did I do it? Here are my top 5 tips.

1. Be sure to check your Sunday newspaper inserts and coupons.com. This is the most obvious place. Many bloggers will also post when new coupons are available online. Two of my favorite resources include Couponing To Disney and Common Sense with Money.

2. Sign up to receive e-mails from the manufacturer. My son wears Huggies most of the time (unless I find a better deal on Pampers), so I registered to receive Huggies e-mails and snail mail. I frequently receive mailers with valuable coupons inside. My recommendation is not to be picky with your brands. Register with Pampers, Huggies, Luvs, etc. to get the most savings. Think about all of the products your baby might use – Johnson’s Baby, Desitin, Enfamil, Similac, Gerber, Beech Nut, Earth’s Best, etc, etc. Register with those sites and watch the manufacturers try to earn your business!

3. Sign up for free parenting magazines. I will try to post these subscriptions as they become available. These usually have coupons inside as well as informative articles. You can also pick up copies of free magazines at Babies ‘R Us.

4. Register at Target. You might be lucky enough to receive the elusive Target baby mailers. And since Target coupons will stack with manufacturer coupons, you will see even more savings.

5. Stock up! If you find a great sale on diapers, buy several packs. The average sale price on diapers is $8.99, but I hardly ever pay over $4 because I stockpile. On Black Friday, my mom and I bought 30 packs of Huggies at HyVee for $3.99 each. I won’t be buying diapers for quite awhile!

What baby items would you like to save on? Leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer your questions!

Tip of the Day 3/19/10

Ask your non-coupon clipping family and friends to save the Sunday inserts for you.

Why pay for multiple newspapers if you don’t have to?

Funny story. My mom buys her Sunday papers at Sam’s Club. One weekend, the guy that checks the receipts at the door asked why she needed so many papers. My mom told him that she liked to read the articles multiple times. The guy stared at her and then said to my dad, “Doesn’t she realize she only needs one paper for that?”

Old Navy Clearance

I stopped in Old Navy today to check out the clearance section. I used my $10 rewards certificate that I received in January to get some awesome deals! (Unfortunately, you can’t combine the rewards card with the 30% off coupon…I tried). These shirts will be perfect for my little guy to wear next fall & winter.

4 toddler shirts = $1.47 each
1 toddler shirt = $3.99
1 tank for me! = $3.99

After the $10 discount and tax, I paid only $4.15!!

So go check out Old Navy and take along the 30% off coupon. Hopefully you can find some great deals, too!

Tip of the Day 3/18/10

Shop end-of-season clearance sales for kids clothing.

The Children’s Place, Kohl’s, Target, Old Navy, Gap, & JCPenney are some of my favorite places to shop for clearance kids clothing. Great deals can be found online (if you can get free shipping) or in-store. I typically find great clothes for next season marked 60%-80% off. Combine a coupon with that, and you’ve got a great deal!

If you’re unsure on size, it’s always better to be too big. Look for pants with elastic or adjustable waists, t-shirts, or jackets that aren’t supposed to be fitted.

What is your favorite Entertainment Book coupon?

Tip of the Day 3/17/10

Save the return envelopes that you receive with junk mail.

I use these envelopes to organize my receipts, take clipped coupons to the store, or keep small papers organized in my purse. It saves you money and makes use of that junk mail.

Eat Better America Newsletter & Coupon Booklet

Sign up here to receive e-mail newsletters with recipes and coupons from Eat Better America. If you sign up now, you will also receive a $10 coupon booklet in the mail.

Eat Better America is a great resource for healthy recipes. This is one of the first sites I go to if I need a new recipe for dinner.

Tip of the Day 3/16/10

Save ALL of your receipts and organize them by month.

I keep all of my receipts in separate envelopes labeled for each month. I used to throw them all into one giant folder, but it took forever to sort through them.

A lot of times, you can go back and submit old receipts for rebates. Just check the dates on the rebate form and then look back in that month’s envelope. Chances are you may have already purchased some or all of the items needed for the rebate. Be careful, though. Some rebates require that all items be purchased on the same receipts, so read carefully.

Online Shopping Tips

Here are some of my favorite places to shop online and a few things I’ve learned.

  • Kohl’s usually provides a free shipping code for credit card holders. This will stack with a percent off code. I love Kohl’s online clearance. Check it often for some great bargains.

  • Banana Republic will e-mail you a free shipping code if you subscribe to their e-mails. See the registration near the bottom of the page. As long as you order at least one item from BR, you can also add items from Old Navy, Gap, Athleta, and Piperlime to your cart and receive free shipping on them as well!

  • JCPenney will only allow you to use one coupon code per order. That means that you have to choose between a discount or free shipping. This is why I usually avoid shopping online with JCPenney. I have found that their in-store sales are generally better. Also, after you shop at JCP, don’t forget to take the survey. The information is located on your receipt. After completing a short survey, you will receive a 15% off coupon for your next purchase. The good news is that this can be combined with other JCP coupons for even more savings.

  • Victoria’s Secret is another retailer that offers good online discounts. You can stack 3 coupons codes per order. I recommend signing up for their e-mails and snail mail, if you are interested. I frequently receive coupons for free panties in the mail.

  • Target offers a new Daily Deal everyday. These are discounted items with free shipping. Look for the Daily Deal logo on Target’s homepage.

  • Amazon has many items that are eligible for Free Super Saver Shipping, which means free shipping if you spend over $25 on these eligible items.

  • allows you to enter 3 promotion codes at checkout. I frequently receive codes for free shipping or dollars off my purchase. I can usually find some great deals in their clearance section. You can also sign up for their free rewards program to earn points. They will send a $10 rewards certificate once you earn 1500 points. DSW also has double points promotions to make it easier to reach this.

Don’t forget to sign up for cashback programs at Ebates, Fat Wallet, Shop At Home, Mr Rebates, and Cashbaq. If I’m making a big online purchase, I check all of these sites to see which has the best cashback percentage. Sometimes they can vary greatly.

A few other resources for coupons codes are FreeShipping.org, Coupon Cabin, Retail Me Not, and Coupon Mountain. There are many others out there, but these are just some of my favorites.

Where are your favorite places to shop online?

Tip of the Day 3/14/10

What is coupon stacking?

Coupon stacking is using a manufacturer coupon and a store coupon on the same product. Target, Walgreens, and Whole Foods have store coupons available for stacking.

Target coupons can be printed from the website or found in home mailers. Walgreens coupons are found in the weekly ad or in coupon booklets found in store. Whole Foods also has a savings booklet available at the door that includes store coupons.

Watch for wording that indicates what type of coupon it is. It will typically be pretty clear whether it is a store or manufacturer coupon. Below is an example of Target coupon. Notice the wording to the left of the expiration date (Target Web Coupon – sorry for the poor quality). In this case, you could stack the Target coupon with a 2 manufacturer’s coupons – one for the diapers and one for the wipes.

What’s for Dinner? 3/11/10

A Year of CrockPotting is a great resource for slow cooker recipes. I own the cookbook, too, and it’s great! The ingredients are generally normal pantry items, so I usually have everything on hand.

Last night, I made a variation of this recipe. Of course, I didn’t follow it exactly, but it still turned out to be yummy. Here is my version.

Slow Cooker Baked Potato Soup
adjusted by T

Ingredients:

2-3 lbs potatoes, peeled and diced
2 cans of chicken broth
1 tsp minced onion
1 tsp garlic
1/3 cup salsa (just because I had a little bit on hand)
1 package cream cheese
bacon & cheese for toppings

Directions:

1. Put potatoes, broth, onion, garlic, and salsa into the slow cooker.

2. Cook on low for 8-10 hours.

3. Remove half of the soup and mix with a hand mixer. This makes the soup part creamy and part chunky.

4. Put the creamy mixture back into the slow cooker and add cream cheese. Stir occasionally, until melted, about 15-30 minutes. I just left my slow cooker set to warm, but you could turn it on high to speed up the melting.

5. Add toppings.

6. Eat!

I purchased the Amber Romance Anti-Bacterial Wipes for $1.99 and panties for $4.99 on two separate orders. With free shipping and at least $20 in rewards cards, that is a $13 money maker!

How I spent my $5 Target gift card!

Today I stopped by Target to stock up on free travel size items and to use the $5 gift card I won from The Frugal Mind. These are great to have on hand for traveling (duh!), but they are also good for donating. I have a box of travel size items to donate to Ronald McDonald House.

Here is what I got:
1 jumbo pack of Pampers
1 Huggies travel wipes
4 Johnson’s Buddies soap
1 travel size Tide
2 travel size Sensodyne
6 Reach floss
1 Rimmel mascara
1 Bandaid 30 count
5 travel size Bandaids
6 Johnson & Johnson First-aid kits
1 Sobe Lifewater (not pictured)

Before coupons: $38.03
After coupons: $3.98

And I still have $1.02 left on my gift card!
Does your Target give overage or adjust the coupons down to the price of the item? I used to get overage all the time, but lately the cashiers have been adjusting the coupons down. Oh well, it was still a great shopping trip even without the overage!

*I found most of these coupon match-ups at Couponing to Disney. Thanks!!

Join the QT Web Group. After completing a monthly survey, you will receive coupons for free or discounted merchandise!

I also received an e-mail from QT about this great promotion. Beginning March 10, you will receive a free 32 oz fountain drink with the purchase of any QT Kitchens sandwich or wrap. This offer is only available for a limited time. Unfortunately, the e-mail doesn’t define “limited time.”
