I just recently discovered that you can get FREE exercise videos on demand. How cool is that?!?! Check it out if you have AT&T U-Verse!

Tip of the Day 4/29/10

Use newspapers to clean your windows.

I can’t explain it, but a crumpled up newspaper will leave your windows clean and streak free. Your hands will be covered in ink though!

This is a good way to use up all those extra newspapers you buy just for the coupons! (If I followed my own advice, I wouldn’t have fingerprints all over my windows πŸ™‚

Sign up for Swagbucks!

I’m still fairly new to Swagbucks myself, but I’ve already earned enough for a $10 Amazon giftcard! Basically you earn codes or points for searching or using the Swagbucks toolbar. They also have Swaghunts, but I don’t know too much about those yet. I’m still learning πŸ™‚

Monday, April 26, 2010

Tip of the Day 4/26/10

Switch to CFL light bulbs.

CFL light bulbs should only be turned off if you plan on leaving the room for more than 15 minutes. Otherwise, they use more electricity. Incandescent bulbs should always be turned off when you leave the room.

From Energy Star:

An ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) will save about $30 over its lifetime and pay for itself in about 6 months. It uses 75 percent less energy and lasts about 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb.

Free Shipping at The Company Store until 4/25/10

Use code FREEDLVR2 at checkout to receive free shipping at The Company Store. Expires 4/25/10.

Tip of the Day 4/23/10

Play a game of “25 pick-up” for a cleaner house.

I like to take a trash bag from room to room, picking up loose papers, old magazines, etc, etc. My house looks much cleaner and it only takes a few minutes! I usually try to pick up 25 things a few nights a week.

You could also play this game and pick up 25 things that need to be moved to another room and put away. Either way, your house will look better in the morning!

Tip of the Day 4/19/10

Don’t always assume warehouse clubs have the best prices!

I used to think that just because I was buying in bulk meant that I was automatically getting a deal. Now I know to ALWAYS calculate the price per unit.

For example, yesterday my local warehouse club wanted $1.44 for 3lbs of bananas (48 cents per pound) and I couldn’t believe people were buying them! I regularly buy bananas at my grocery store for 39 cents per pound or less. Okay, so that’s not a huge difference, but enough for me to notice πŸ™‚

Learn your stock-up price for your favorite items and stick to it. And always carry a calculator πŸ™‚

Tip of the Day 4/9/10

Frozen fruits and vegetables are just as good for you as fresh fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables chosen for freezing tend to be processed at their peak ripeness. This is when they have the highest amount of nutrients.

Fresh food has a tendency to go bad in my house, so I love to stock up on frozen veggies. Especially when I can get them for 30 cents a bag!

Do you have a Schnucks eScrip card?

I just learned about this yesterday. Schnucks will donate up to 3% of your purchases to the organization of your choice, as long as they are registered with eScrip. It’s free to join. Just ask about it at customer service the next time you go grocery shopping.

One question I still have is this – Is the 3% calculated before or after coupons? Do you know?

Meal Planning

I recently started meal planning for my family, and it has made a big difference around my house. The evenings are less stressful, no one is asking “what’s for dinner?”, and dinner is always on time. Here are my tips for creating a meal plan.

1. Look at the weekly advertisements. Write down items that are on sale that your family likes. Search for coupons in a database, such as couponmom.com. You can also refer to a coupon match-up list, if you know of one for your store. These can be found easily by doing a Google search.

2. Take a look inside your pantry to see what ingredients you already have on hand. Write down some meals ideas based on items you want to buy and items you already have. If you have trouble with this step, there are many online recipes sources. AllRecipes.com is my favorite. You can search by ingredients you want or don’t want in a recipe. I usually start by choosing the protein for each meal and building the menu from there.

3. Are there any other items you need? Add them to your list. Don’t forget to search for available coupons.

4. Create your meal plan. Is there a recipe that you should double and freeze for later? Do you have a busy night when a slow cooked meal would be easiest? Do you have a slow night that you can take more time to cook?

Why do I meal plan?
· It saves time. I avoid mid-week trips to the grocery store to pick up missing ingredients. I also don’t waste time staring blankly into my refrigerator trying to concoct a recipe.
· It saves money. Impulse spending is reduced, and I am less likely to buy products that aren’t on sale.
· I waste less. I’ve found that planning ahead means less rotten food in the fridge.
· My family eats healthier. Writing a menu on paper makes it easier to see nutritional gaps.

Meal planning might sound daunting at first, but give it a try and you will quickly experience the benefits for yourself. Remember that your plan is not written in stone. You can switch up the schedule if you have to. Eventually you will be able to recycle your meal plans and spend even less time on the planning stage.

Check out Org Junkie for more information and recipes.

Kohl’s Updated Clearance

Kohl’s updated their clearance items!!

I shopped yesterday and bought several t-shirts for my little guy to wear this spring/summer. I noticed that (in general) the prices were the same online as in-store, but not in all cases. The store I visited had lots of clearance, so if you have a store close by you might want to stop in.

If you have a Kohl’s card, you should have received a 15% off coupon in the mail.

Let me know what bargains you find!

Tip of the Day – 4/7/10

What is Tulle Day?

It’s a 24 hour sale at tulle4us.com. The sale starts 4/6/10 at 2am CST, 12am PST.

Each month the site has select items on super sale. See above for this month’s specials. I’ve ordered several items from the website and love them!

The sizing is a bit weird, so be sure you read the size charts. I have tops in medium, large, and x-large and they all fit. Take a look, and let me know if you order anything!

K-Mart Super Doubles?

Did anyone go to K-Mart Super Doubles yet?

I decided not to go….it just isn’t worth it for me with the 5 coupon limit. But I might change my mind if I get really bored this week!

Tip of the Day 4/5/10

I read this tip from Niki at Free to be Frugal and just had to share.

Niki suggests saving the boxes of brand name cereal and filling them with the generic version if your kids (or husband) are brand loyal. Love it!

After coupons: $24.68

Thanks, CouponSTL for the match-ups!

Happy Easter!

I’m taking a long weekend. See you back here on Monday!

Tip of the Day 4/2/10

It’s the wording on a coupon that matters, NOT the picture.

Make sure you actually read the wording on a coupon. Don’t trust the picture. For example, just because a full-size bottle of laundry detergent is pictured does NOT mean that you cannot use it on another size. If the coupon’s wording does specify a particular size or exclude trial size, you can use it on any size.

I’ve had many cashiers tell me that I can’t use a coupon because I didn’t buy the exact item pictured. This is not true. If the cashier won’t listen to you, stay calm and ask for a manager.
