Tip of the Day 5/26/10

Frame scrapbook paper and use it as wall art!

Check out this post from Rose Knows Coupons. I’m loving this idea. It looks great and you can change out the paper for a different look! You could also try framing wrapping paper or fabric. Get creative!

Tip of the Day 5/25/10

Wow! There are only 7 months until Christmas. I like to get a major head start on my Christmas shopping by watching for great clearance sales, especially on toys. I love buying presents for our little cousins now at a fraction of the price. They get a nice gift, and I get to keep some money in my wallet…can’t beat that! Target usually has an awesome toy clearance sale toward the middle to end of the summer. Watch for it!

That’s one less thing you’ll have to worry about in December.

Tip of the Day 5/24/10

Check out this post from Already Pretty, Alternate Uses for Jewelry.

My favorite tip is using a bracelet to lengthen a necklace. Do you have any tips or tricks to share?

Tip of the Day 5/21/10

If you have a deep flower pot, fill the bottom 1/3 with soda cans or packing peanuts so you can use less dirt.

The plant won’t mind and you will save money on soil. It allows for easy drainage, and the pot will be lighter

Baby Gear: What you don’t need!

1. A crib bedding set: All that your little one really needs is a sheet & a blanket when they get older. My son slept in swaddlers and sleep sacks until he was old enough to safely use a blanket. Bumper pads are not recommended because of the risk of suffocation & SIDS. Not to mention, as your child gets older, they can use bumper pads to help them climb out of the crib. That cute comforter is pretty useless, too, unless you want to use it for wall art. The crib skirt is just for decoration, and if you really think you need one, you can buy it separately. So, in reality the only useful piece of a bedding set is the sheet, which you can also buy separately. You will want more than one sheet anyway. Don’t waste your money on an expensive set.

2.
Hooded bath towels
: Yes, these are cute. You might want one for a cute picture, but don’t go overboard. These towels are thin and not very absorbent. As long as you wash your regular towels in fragrance-free detergent, you can use these on your baby and save some cash.

3.
Burp cloths: I found that a pack of cloth diapers works much better than cutesie burp rags. Burp
rags were smaller and thinner than the cloth diapers. Diapers might be uglier, but they do a much better job of cleaning up.

4.
Changing table
: You can place a changing pad on top of a dresser instead. These pads come with hardware to attach to the back of the dress for safety. That’s one less piece of furniture in the room. I also would not recommend buying a crib with an attached changing table. It might seem like a smart, money saving idea, but it’s not. As your baby gets older, the changing table will be a good way for him or her to try to escape from the crib and possibly get hurt.

5. Lots of dressy outfits: My son lived in sleepers and onesies for the first 6 months. Let your baby be comfortable. They aren’t trying to impress anyone. Also, children’s clothing is a great thing to buy second-hand. Since babies outgrow clothes so fast, they don’t have time to wear them out. Just watch for stains.

6. Diaper bag: I’m not saying you don’t need a bag, because you definitely do. If you know me, you know I’m obsessed with purses, so I have more than a few “diaper” bags. Just find one that doesn’t look like a diaper bag. That way you will be able to use it for yourself later.

7.
Diaper disposal bin
: We bought one of these and used it for a few months. It was nice at first, but the batteries died very quickly and the bag always needed to be changed. Now, we just use a regular trash can for non-stinky trash and take the stinky diapers directly outside.

8. Wipe warmer: I never bought one, and I really don’t see the point. I’ve heard that it just dries the wipes out.

9.
Playmat
: A clean blanket on the floor works just fine.

10.
Special laundry detergent
: You might not have noticed this, but let me tell you a secret. Dreft (or any other brand labeled “BABY”) is more expensive. You can buy the “free & clear” version of your favorite laundry detergent and save some money. It is important to use a fragrance-free detergent because babies have sensitive skin. However, don’t waste your money on those detergents specially formulated for babies. I haven’t noticed any difference other than price.

Tip of the Day 5/20/10

Make your own spice mixes!

Usually with a sale and a coupon, I can get seasoning packets and marinade mixes for FREE. But if I can’t, I usually just make my own mix.

Tip of the Day 5/19/10

To make your wardrobe more versatile, shop for pieces that can be easily layered.

I look for cute tops (on sale, of course!) that can be worn alone during the warmer months and layered under cardigans in the winter. I actually own very few heavy sweaters, even though Missouri winters can be frigid! A lot of my clothing items can be worn across several seasons.

Tip of the Day 5/18/10

Use lemon-flavored Kool-aid to clean your dishwasher.

Just fill the detergent cup and run the empty dishwasher through a complete cycle. Only the lemon flavor works for this.

Thanks, Real Simple and All You!

Tip of the Day 5/17/10

To save time in the kitchen, choose boneless cuts of meat.

Boneless chicken breasts or pork chops take about 10 minutes to cook, while bone-in varieties take about twice as long.

Thanks, Real Simple!

Tip of the Day 5/14/10

If you live in the St. Louis area, check out Saucy Hot Deals. This site is owned by Sauce Magazine and sells restaurant gift certificates for a fraction of the price. See what they have to say about themselves below.

If you’re on the Internet, you’ve likely seen all of the deal-of-the day sites,
like Groupon. But most, if not all of them, are from out-of-town companies.
Sauce Magazine has also jumped into the business with
www.saucyhotdeals.com, but they
maintain their commitment to the community and its health by offering a better
product for you and our local independent restaurants and
retailers.

We’re hoping that you’ll appreciate what they’ve tried to do
with Hot Sauce: You get a chance to try great restaurants at great discounts,
and they’re offering the restaurants a larger slice of the sales to help them
grow. Most importantly, they’re supporting the wider community by giving 10
percent of their proceeds to local charities, like Food Outreach and St. Louis
Children’s Hospital. The result is that they have had a tremendous response from
local establishments, who are eager to participate.A win-win for
everyone!

If you would like to take advantage of these great deals,
please take the time to go to
www.saucyhotdeals.com and subscribe in
the upper right hand corner; this will make sure you receive Hot Sauce deals in
your in-box every morning.
Thanks, Rachel!

To save money and energy, let your dishes air dry instead of using your dishwasher’s drying cycle.

Tip of the Day 5/11/10

Create your own artwork. (Even if you’re not artistic!)

I love this idea from Real Simple. Use leftover fabric, or even an old t-shirt or dress, to create a unique piece of art.

Tip of the Day 5/10/10

It’s usually cheaper to buy a new razor than to buy the refill cartridges!

Anyone who shaves knows how expensive new razor blades are. However, many manufacturers put out high value coupons for razors. Combine this with a sale and you can get the whole razor (and usually a few refill blades) for much less than a package of refill cartridges.

Take this scenario from Money Saving Madness as an example. This deal is good at Target until Saturday, May 15:

Buy 2 Schick Hydro 5 Blade Razor $7.99 each, Get a $5 Target gift card
Use 2 $5/1 coupons from the 5/9 SS
Plus, use 2 $1/1 Printable Target store coupons
Pay $3.98 & Get a $5 Target gift card
Final Price: FREE + a $1.02 money-maker!

Or this Walgreens scenario from Clippin’ with Carie. Good until May 15:
Buy 1 Schick Hydro Razor $7.99
Use $5/1 Coupon (5/9 SS)
Pay $2.99 (+ tax)
Get $5 RR

Tip of the Day 5/7/10

Always pay attention at the checkout (or check your receipt before you leave the store).

I went grocery shopping last night and the cashier rang up one of my items twice. I was also overcharged for two items. Since it was only 20 cents (and I had a restless toddler with me) I decided to let it go, but under other circumstances I would have been at customer service. Some stores have a policy that if an item does not ring up correctly, it’s free. Does your store do this?

Tip of the Day 5/6/10

Check out Etsy!

Ok, so Etsy will probably make you spend money, but it’s okay to splurge every once in awhile! Etsy is kind of like an eBay for handmade and vintage items. Etsy is my favorite place to find unique pieces of jewelry. I’ve found great items for great prices (but not everything is cheap!)

You can search Etsy in lots of ways. My favorites are by location, by color, by category, and just doing a generic search. Click the Buy button at the top to see all of the ways to search. Go play around. It’s very easy to lose track of time!

Add Etsy’s Blog, The Storque, to your reader. It features different artists and items AND sometime they include discount codes or specials for various sellers.
