Tip of the Day 7/29/10

Check out this post by Madame Deals that discusses good buy prices for produce.

I don’t buy a lot of fresh produce because it always seems to go to waste, so I never know if I’m getting a good deal or not. This is a helpful list.

Tip of the Day 7/28/10 – $10 Tuesdays at Banana Republic!

Shop at Banana Republic on Tuesdays!

I just discovered this yesterday and am so excited! I stopped in Banana Republic to browse the clearance racks and found a pair of pants that were originally $59.50 marked down to $19.99…and they fit perfectly! Now, $19.99 is usually more than this cheapskate will spend on pants, but since they fit perfectly I couldn’t say no.

When I got to the checkout, the cashier told me that everything in the store was an extra 30% off (offer good until 8/1). Score! Then, she told me if I paid with my Banana/Gap/Old Navy card, I would get a $10 reward card. Score again! Apparently you get a $10 rewards card when you make an in-store purchase on Tuesday. So, those $59.50 pants actually cost me $13.99 and I still have $10 to spend. You know where I will be next Tuesday.

I’m assuming this promotion is at all Banana Republic stores, but I don’t know how long it lasts. If you’re in a mall on a Tuesday, it’s worth checking out. They had some great clearance prices. I used to shy away from this store because everything was so expensive, but lately I’ve discovered that it’s actually very affordable if you wait for a sale.

Tip of the Day 7/22/10 – Expiration Dates

I have a fear of mold and rotten food. I check expiration dates before I eat anything (right, Mom?).

That’s why I love this article from . It will teach you everything you need to know about expiration dates. I thought I already knew everything about food freshness, but even I learned something.

I laughed when I saw these day counters at The Container Store. I can just see one of these ticking time bombs attached to every item in my fridge. However, that would cost a small fortune and we all know I’m too cheap frugal for that. I’ll stick to reading the expiration dates.

Donating Travel Size Items

Ronald McDonald House (RMHC) is one of the charities that I love to donate my extras to. When I was a kid, my brother was a patient at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, so I know just how much these small items can mean to a family. RMHC offers families complimentary snacks, laundry detergent, and toiletries, but they depend on donations for these items.

Travel size items are frequently FREE after coupon, so it’s really easy to throw some of these extra items in your cart. I also save free samples that I receive in the mail and travel size items from hotels for RMHC. See a full list of requested items HERE. This list is for the St. Louis area, but please contact your local RMHC if you are interested in donating.

I would estimate that I spent a total of $5 for everything in the two pictures below. It’s amazing how powerful coupons are. Just by picking up a few extra items each time I shop, I can really make a difference in someone’s life. That’s pretty amazing for only $5. I encourage you to seek out your own charity and make a difference with your couponing skills.

Tip of the Day 7/21/10 – Uses for vinegar

I’ve already told you that I use vinegar in my flower bed to kill weeds. Here is a site that shares 1,001 uses for vinegar.

I’m going to try using it to deodorize my garbage disposal next. Are there any ideas you are going to try?

Tip of the Day 7/20/10 – Produce Freezing Tips

Check out Kitchen Stewardship for instructions on freezing different types of produce.

I love my freezer. I freeze vegetables, fruit, meat, leftovers, desserts, and casseroles to save time later and avoid waste. This is a great way to save money – especially if you have a garden. Freezing preserves more of the nutrients in vegetables than canning and is a lot easier. Just make sure to label & date everything and follow the first in first out rule (or FIFO for all of my accountant readers 🙂

Tip of the Day 7/13/10 – Ground Meat Tic-Tac-Toe

Don’t have time to brown your ground meat before freezing? Try this cool trick from Real Simple.

Place meat in a zippered bag, press it flat, and seal. Press a chopstick over the bag, like tic-tac-toe, to create a grid and freeze. When you need to use the meat, just break off enough for your recipe.

Giveaway Website: Sugar Pop Ribbons

Sugar Pop Ribbons Giveaway Logo

Are you looking for a blog that features great giveaways? Sugar Pop Ribbons might be exactly what you’re looking for. I’ve been following this blog for about 4 months and recently won the Alphabet Plates giveaway.

I ordered the personalized pancake plate and a place mat for my toddler, and he loves it! The plate is the perfect size for his high chair tray, and it has held up really well in the dishwasher. I’m really impressed with the quality. We haven’t used the place mat yet, but it will be great for when he gets a little older.

I highly recommend following Sugar Pop Ribbons and checking out Alphabet Plates.

Tip of the Day 7/7/10 – Tagless clearance items

Have you ever found something cute on a clearance rack, but it was missing the price tag? Maybe you just put it back because you thought it wasn’t worth the hassle to ask a sales associate about the price.

I’ve recently learned that it really pays to ask the price! Just last week I found a scarf at Old Navy that I fell in love with in early spring, but refused to pay full price for. The scarf was missing the price tag, but I took it to the register and got it for about 75% off! Score!

I also found a pair of pajamas at Target for my son that weren’t marked. I asked and paid only $1.48 for them!

So, now I always ask if I’m even remotely interested in the item.

Have you scored any great bargains this way?

Tip of the Day 7/2/10

Another travel tip – Bring food to the airport.

Airport food is overpriced and not too tasty (in my opinion). I paid $7 for a sandwich with 2 slices of turkey and 1 slice of cheese. Not exactly filling.

Pack snacks in your carry-on or even bring along a sandwich if you will be there during meal time. If you are flying back home, you could also bring leftovers from last night’s meal.

Tip of the Day 7/1/10

Don’t order kids meals for toddlers.

We don’t eat out that often, but when we do we used to order a kids meal for our toddler. He would eat less than half of it, so we would always be taking leftovers home. We went on vacation last week and decided to try sharing our meals with him. Restaurant portions are generally too big anyway, so this worked out great. We saved money, didn’t waste food, and he got to eat a variety of foods.

No more kids meals for us…until he gets a little older (or if kids eat free 🙂
